"Aviation is not inherently dangerous, but to an even greater extent than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect" — Capt. A.G. Lamplugh

AVgas is my contribution to the aviation community online; I've been collecting links and resources for a few years now, and think I've got enough information to make this a worthwhile site. Feedback and contributions from visitors is very welcome - help me make this an even better website!

My name is Brian Burger; I'm a Private Pilot flying out of Victoria, BC, Canada, training for my Commercial and (eventually) my Instructor rating. I'm active on rec.aviation.piloting, r.a.student, and sometimes on r.a.ifr, if you're on Usenet. I've been flying since 2002 (got my PPL in July 2002), and I'm afraid I'm hooked! This website is just part of my addiction...

New Stuff:

The Links:

I'm not going to link to every single good aviation site out there - that would take forever - but I am going to try to maintain a list of the best sites in each category, as well as links to sites that seem to have been overlooked but deserve more visitors!

One thing I'm going to be doing is noting beside each link which country a site is based in or concerned with. I think this is especially valuable when regulations are concerned - and, of course, for figuring out which currency prices are likely to be in, if you're buying something.

Site suggestions are always welcome - if you send me a URL, I can't guarantee that I will add the site to my links, but I will visit and consider it. Please feel free to suggest your own site, if you want - publicity is rarely a bad thing!

Cool Link:

US Naval Observatory - Astronomical Applications Data Services. Trust me, this is actually a cool link; the Sunrise/Sunset Time Calculator will generate a table giving you these times for an entire year; all you have to do is plug in Lat/Long co-ords for your location (or that of your home airport). Airport Lat/Long is easy to find - any airport guide will have them!

Articles & Other Items:

I've written a couple of book reviews of worthwhile aviation books, and there are several guest authors I'm working to get published here. Often these contributions will be based on a Usenet post someone made that I think is too good to just gather dust in Google Groups's archive.

airWords Reviews 1: Stick & Rudder & Taildragger Tactics. One sixty year old classic aviation text, and one brand new tailwheel text.

The "Dirty Dozen" - the Twelve Major Causes of Human Error In Aviation [PDF. 2MB] is an 8.5"x11" poster I created after taking a Human Factors In Avation seminar recently. You can download & print this for any personal or professional reason, providing you're not selling the poster directly - please feel free to include it in classroom handouts or training material, though!

If you like the Dirty Dozen poster and want to talk to me about doing custom designs for you or your organisation, please contact me through Wirelizard Design, my web & graphic design business.

About This Site:

Technical Stuff: Avgas is entirely based on XHTML 1.0 Strict and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) formats; all validated by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) HTML & CSS validators. Avgas should work in any up-to-date browser, at any screen size, and degrade more-or-less gracefully in older broswers. It should even work in Lynx and other text-only broswers - and on PDAs or web-capable celphones...

The image at the top of the page is one of my photographs of VFC Cessna 172 C-GPFW at Lillooet, BC. I used Inkscape & The GIMP to edit it.
